WHY 47?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

47 has always been my favorite number, probably because it's my birthday. Hubby thinks I'm nutty because I'll notice it everywhere we go.

Me: "Look, we're passing mile marker 47!"
Hubby: "Yeah, and...."
Me: "Well, it's 47, isn't that cool?!"
Hubby: "Um, sure, hon."

Lately we've been catching up on the first 3 seasons of Alias (thanks for the loan, Moxie & Kid B!) and damn, there are a lot of references to 47! I've been trying to find out why JJ Abrams (creator of Alias) is as obviously obsessed with this number as I am. I ruled out his birthday. But in my search I did learn that the CIA (focal part of Alias for those of you who don't watch it) was established in 1947. And I found out there's a 47 Society where other freaks like me dork out over 47 sightings too. So is JJ Abrams or his writing staff members of and paying homage in their writing to this society? Apparently the Star Trek writers were back in the day.

Answers, I need answers....

I think Abrams is just latching onto that 47 thing because all the other math/sci-fi geeks do it.

It's one of those weird things that people think is some strange phenomenon, but it really isn't.

Very cool to hear you're an Alias freak, though!

Something else to consider is Abrams' fascination with numerical significance in general. Perhaps his exposure to Sar's Cult of 47 led to the emphasis on numbers in Lost.

Araider - um, that would be APRIL 7. Those silly Raider fans. ;)

TLM - Could it be we actually have something in common? Kidding of course. Kid Bastard actually encouraged me to start watching it this past season (4), so I did and thought it was pretty good. I'm all the way up to the 3rd episode of season 3** and you're right, I am truly an Alias freak now!

Nedhead - I'm pretty sure that was already established. I did grow up with Strider, afterall!

Welcome to SD, Chris! All - Chris is one of my gifted writer friends. You can find his short stories showcased on his blog, Spontaneous Fiction (see blogroll) and links to the comics he's authored. Anyway, Chris, you're right, JJ Abrams does use 47 a bit in LOST, but I've also learned that 23 is the number of significance for that show.

Doug - huh?

**Speaking about the significance of numbers, my daughters are 3 years, 3 months apart, and were both born 3 days early. Wonder what three 3's means...

You said your birthday was 47. I'm asking of which month? If "Shoe" is in the Devil's Dictionary, look for it in early April.

Araider - Yep, Hubby is indeed a Raider fan. But he fits the bill too, as he tells everyone he calls me "hon" in case he forgets my name. ;)

Doug - Ah, I see. And if not found under shoe, try stilletto.

Araider - Gene Wilder As Willie Wonka? Agreed. However, the list to which I refer has all to do with Willies and Wonkas but not Willie Wonka.

Um, how did you attract this poor "araider" troll? Is that stuff for real?

Shea - araider's not a troll, just a misguided right-wing nut who Strider happens to know from yester-year.

Nedhead - That may be, but what do you know, you're a Bronco's fan! (araider - I'm sure you can do much better than that...)

23 is even weirder. Robert Anton Wilson has alot to say about it.

Gabe - I plan on exploring the number 23. Thus far when I think of 23, I think of Michael Jordan, Don Mattingly and Bruce Driver (former Devil's hockey player). Hey, hubby doesn't call me his sports wife for nothin! ;)

It is strange that I would be so facinated by numbers when I am so horribly, terribly, ungifted in their use. In other words, I just flat out suck at math.
