Sound Destruction: A.I. TAKES ON THE SPIN DOCTOR

Rove has the spin control working overtime in defense against the report Amnesty International released last week which says prisoners at the U.S. Navy base (Guantanamo Bay) in Cuba had been mistreated and called for the prison to be shut down. Cheney appeared on Larry King to declare he was "offended" by the report. (What? Cheney made a public appearance?) And Bush has claimed the report is "absurd". (What? Bush actually read a report?)

In response, Dr. William F. Schulz, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA released this statement:
"What is 'absurd' is President Bush's attempt to deny the deliberate policies of his Administration, which has detained individuals without charge or trial in prisons at Guantanamo Bay, Bagram Air Base and other locations. What is 'absurd' and indeed outrageous is the Bush Administration's failure to undertake a full independent investigation, and that completed reports into human rights violations in these prisons remain classified and unseen. The network of secret detention centers operated by the US around the world must be opened to scrutiny by independent human rights groups and those responsible for torture, no matter how senior, must be held accountable. It is also worth noting that this administration never finds it 'absurd' when we criticize Cuba, China, or when we condemned the violations in Iraq under Saddam Hussein."

Does anyone who is accused of human rights violations accept the charges of the accuser? Do we actually expect the current administration to say, "Oh yeah, we messed up and we will now fix things!"?

Not really on topic, but:

It is more of the same. It seems to me that Congress will continue to allow BushCo free reign, and therefore we will be stuck in this course of action at least until the next election. Hopefully, at that time we can put some people in power who will try to rectify some of the mistakes that have occurred.

It is shamefull that our Congress is not willing to hold anyone to task (probably because they have blood on their hands too). They are the group that can actually do the policing and get the Administration to put up or shut up. Why don't we hear about pressure on Congress? Why are all our comments just directed to the Administration? Did we all forget about checks and balances? If one part gets to strong, the remaining parts need to recreate the balance.

It is shameful indeed and a disgrace. Aren't they the same people who are supposed to represent their constituents and serve as a collective voice on their behalf? Yes, I understand the right holds the majority in congress, but weren't they the same folks whose moral compasses went haywire when Clinton was in office? I dunno, maybe a bj on the job is more reprehensible than plotting an irroneous war then turning your back on the mass of innocent people that continue to suffer and die as a result.
