FREE ELECTIONS?

Saw this article in yesterday's USA Today. Found it very interesting (note emphasis provided by me).

In an interview Sunday with CBS' 60 Minutes, Putin objected to Bush's criticism that Russia has retreated from democratic principles. "In the United States, you first elect the electors and then they vote for the presidential candidates. In Russia, the president is elected through the direct vote of the whole population. That might be even more democratic," Putin said, according to excerpts released by CBS. "Four years ago, your presidential election was decided by the court. ... But we're not going to poke our noses into your democratic system because that's up to the American people."

I have to say, Putin has a point there.

Putin does have a point. The way Bush and others toss around the word "democracy" is pitiful. It has lost all meaning to many people, I think. Many Americans (the ones who can't find ______ ona map) think democracy is a word defined by Americans' lifestyle. Bush is equally bad about using the word "freedom" as a psychological keyword.

Wow, tips from Russia on democracy. Still, you're right, he has a point. The electoral college seems ridiculous to me. I understand it's supposed to increase fairness for people who don't live in super-populated areas, but honestly, the candidate who gets the most votes should win.

Pretty sad commentary when Russia is more democratic than the US.
